Operation Trident: Inter-Agency Action Against Transnational Narco-Hawala Syndicates
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in close coordination with the Enforcement Directorate and state police forces of Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur, executed a multi-state sweep dubbed Operation Trident. The operation struck 38 locations simultaneously, dismantling a multi-crore international narco-financial network operating across the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor.
Relevance to Internal Security
This operation is directly relevant to General Studies Paper III under internal security, focusing on border management, illicit cross-border smuggling, and the nexus between drug cartels, hawala networks, and transnational crime. The northeastern borderlands have historically faced vulnerabilities stemming from porous borders, ungoverned trade routes, and illicit funding mechanisms that threaten socio-economic stability. The enforcement action aligns with the Union Government's stated target to eliminate all narcotics syndicates by December 31, 2029.

Operational Highlights and Institutional Coordination
Operation Trident targeted both the logistical conduits and the illicit financial infrastructure of syndicates routing methamphetamine and heroin from Myanmar into mainland India and Bangladesh via the northeastern states:
- Financial and Material Rupture: The coordinated raids unearthed hawala transactions worth Rs 100 crore, resulted in the freezing of 1,424 bank accounts, attachment of properties valued at Rs 17.82 crore, and seizure of Rs 12 lakh in cash along with 500 detonators.
- Targeting the Kingpin Network: The targeted syndicate was orchestrated by a Myanmar-based drug lord, Thangcintuang (alias Chintuang or Tluanga), who had been arrested in Delhi earlier in May after extensive surveillance.
- Geographical Convergence: Multi-agency composite teams operated under a unified command structure covering critical border nodes such as Champhai, Aizawl, and the border trading post of Zokhawthar in Mizoram, alongside bases in Churachandpur in Manipur and the Cachar corridor in Assam.
- Intelligence Fusion: Conducting concurrent strikes across challenging terrains prevented suspects from fleeing and blocked the concealment of illicit assets, illustrating effective intelligence-sharing and cooperative federalism in domestic law enforcement.
