How is the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan transforming infrastructure?

October 18, 202610 views

Launched in October 2021, the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan is transforming India's infrastructure planning by shifting from fragmented, isolated silos to a single, connected national network.

Key Pillars of Transformation

  • GIS-Based Integrated Planning: The master plan operates as a GIS-based digital platform that integrates spatial data across 16 key central ministries and departments (and expands across 44 ministries as well as 36 states and Union Territories). It processes data across more than 1,500 layers to model future infrastructure needs.

  • Pre-Construction Gap Identification: By mapping projects digitally before physical execution starts, planners can identify inter-departmental gaps, resolve alignment issues, and coordinate timelines seamlessly across agencies.

  • Unified ₹100 Lakh Crore Mapping: The platform unifies infrastructure projects worth over ₹100 lakh crore, bringing together highways, railways, ports, airports, inland waterways, and power lines into one synchronized ecosystem.

  • Logistics Cost Reduction: By eliminating bottlenecks and facilitating multi-modal connectivity, Gati Shakti has helped reduce India's logistics costs from 13–14% of GDP down to nearly 8%, making Indian products significantly more competitive in global markets.

  • Multi-Modal Connectivity & Freight Policy: Under this framework, initiatives such as the Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) Policy (launched in December 2021) encourage private investment in developing modern, rail-linked cargo terminals across the country to streamline industrial supply chains.
