What are the challenges in the Nepal flood recovery?

Locating and Rescuing the Missing: Over 2,500 people remain missing. This includes more than 900 workers from hydropower sites, with rescuers using drilling machines, excavators, and hydraulic cutters to locate tunnel entrances where an estimated 100 trapped workers are believed to still be alive. Additionally, hundreds of foreign nationals and Indian citizens remain unaccounted for.

Active Environmental Threats and Damaged Infrastructure: Ongoing recovery is disrupted by active hazards, such as a fresh flood in the Trishuli River that recently swept away a suspension bridge. Geologists and researchers point out that the region remains highly vulnerable to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and geological instability.

Staggering Economic Burden: Rebuilding infrastructure will require immense financial resources. Nepal's Finance Minister estimated that the reconstruction will cost $4 billion to $5 billion, which represents nearly a tenth of the country's entire economy.
